There’s something so special about engagement sessions in and around Washington, D.C. The city has this incredible balance of historic architecture, hidden gardens, quiet corners, and modern spaces — which means every session can feel completely different depending on the vibe you’re drawn to. Whether you want something romantic and editorial, playful and local, or inspired by nature, these are some of my absolute favorite places to photograph couples.
Washington National Cathedral has some of the most beautiful grounds in the city, and Bishop’s Garden feels romantic year-round. Between the stone pathways, climbing greenery, and cathedral backdrop, the entire space feels timeless and quietly dramatic in the best way.

Tucked away in Georgetown, Tudor Place feels like a secret garden in the middle of the city. The sprawling grounds, ivy-covered pathways, and historic charm make it one of the most romantic locations for engagement photos. It has such a timeless, European feel — especially during spring and early summer when everything is in bloom.
A photography permit is required here and costs approximately $100 for one hour of shooting time.

There’s something effortlessly romantic about wandering through Georgetown with a camera. Between the historic row homes, ivy-covered brick walls, hidden alleyways, waterfront views, and charming little cafés, every corner feels cinematic. I love this location because it can feel both polished and relaxed at the same time — perfect for couples who want their session to feel like a slow afternoon together in the city. Whether we’re grabbing coffee, strolling along the canal, or catching golden hour on the quiet side streets, Georgetown always gives that timeless, editorial DC feel.

The Portrait Gallery is one of my favorite indoor engagement session locations in DC, especially if you’re drawn to art, architecture, and a more editorial feel. The glass atrium has the dreamiest natural light and an abundance of exotic indoor plants. The mix of modern lines with historic architecture makes the entire space feel elevated without being overly formal. I love that it gives us room to slow down, wander, and create photos that feel both artistic and intimate — especially on colder days or during summer heat when an indoor location sounds ideal.

Dumbarton Oaks is one of the dreamiest garden locations in DC. The stone staircases, overgrown pathways, and layered garden spaces feel incredibly cinematic and romantic. No matter the season, it always photographs beautifully — whether it’s lush and green in the summer or quiet and moody in the fall.
While they officially maintain a no-professional-photography policy, visitors can reserve garden admission tickets for around $17.79 per person.

If you want engagement photos that feel elevated and editorial, Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens is stunning. The estate feels like stepping into a European countryside garden with beautifully manicured grounds, fountains, and elegant architecture. I especially love the Japanese & Rose Gardens. What I love most is how versatile it is — you can get so many different looks in one session.
A photography permit is required here and currently costs around $300, giving access to multiple areas across the estate for a really dynamic gallery.

Located just outside the city in Wheaton, Brookside Gardens is perfect for couples who want a more natural, outdoorsy feel. Between the walking trails, gardens, and open green spaces, it feels peaceful and immersive — especially in the spring and summer months.
A photography permit is required and costs approximately $50.

The combination of the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden and nearby Smithsonian gardens gives such a quintessential DC backdrop. You get a mix of nature, city energy, art, and architecture all within walking distance. It’s especially perfect for couples wanting a more playful, wandering-around-the-city kind of session.

As someone who has lived on Capitol Hill for years, this neighborhood will always have my heart. Capitol Hill and Eastern Market are perfect if you want engagement photos that feel local, personal, and authentically DC. Think colorful row homes, historic streets, cozy cafés, and quiet parks with so much character.

The Jefferson Memorial is one of the most iconic engagement session locations in DC for a reason. The white marble architecture, sweeping views of the Tidal Basin, and soft light reflecting off the water create such a timeless and romantic atmosphere. It feels especially magical at sunrise when the city is still quiet and the light is soft and glowy. During cherry blossom season it’s incredibly beautiful, but honestly photographs well year-round — whether you want something classic and elegant or playful and windswept by the water.
Because it’s part of the National Mall, no photography permit is typically required for smaller engagement sessions as long as there’s no large setup or equipment involved.

Alexandria always feels romantic. The cobblestone streets, waterfront views, charming alleyways, and historic architecture create such a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. It’s one of the best locations for couples wanting something relaxed, timeless, and full of texture and color. Be sure to check out Josephine’s Bar for drinks afterward!

For couples who feel most like themselves outdoors, Theodore Roosevelt Island is such an underrated gem. The wooded trails, wooden bridges, and quiet waterfront paths make it feel like you’ve escaped the city completely, while still having skyline views peeking through the trees. It’s adventurous, peaceful, and incredibly beautiful at golden hour.
