When most people think about hiring a photographer, they think of engagements, weddings, or growing their family. But some of the most meaningful moments worth documenting happen in the seasons in between—the chapters that deserve to be remembered simply because they matter to you.
When Kat first reached out, she shared that she and her husband, Xabier, wanted to document a milestone season of life. Both active-duty service members—Kat serving in the Navy and Xabier in the Marine Corps—they are preparing for promotions that mark the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. This promotion will be especially meaningful, as it will likely be the last one Xabier receives before transitioning out of military service in 2027.
They wanted photographs that would preserve this chapter of their story. Kat shared that one day she hopes their future children will look back on these images and see the foundation their family was built upon—a reminder of who they were, what they accomplished, and the life they created together.

From our very first conversation, I knew we were going to get along beautifully.
Kat envisioned something clean, timeless, and elegant. Because their dress uniforms are bright white, she wanted a location that felt refined and classic without feeling overly formal or intimidating. After discussing their vision, Agecroft Hall & Gardens in Richmond immediately came to mind.
And honestly, it couldn’t have been a more perfect fit.

Nestled along the James River, Agecroft Hall feels like stepping into another world. With its historic Tudor-style architecture, sprawling gardens, stone pathways, and dramatic estate grounds, the property offers an incredible variety of backdrops while maintaining a cohesive, timeless feel.
For couples looking for a location that feels elevated without being overly extravagant, Agecroft strikes that balance effortlessly. The estate’s neutral stonework pairs beautifully with formal attire, while the gardens soften the space and create opportunities for romantic, natural moments.
Whether you’re planning engagement photos, anniversary portraits, military promotion photos, or simply want an excuse to document this season of your relationship, Agecroft provides a setting that feels both grand and deeply personal.

One of my favorite things about Kat and Xabier was how naturally they interacted with one another.
While Kat was excited about creating polished portraits that celebrated this milestone, Xabier mentioned he felt most comfortable in candid moments rather than heavily posed photographs. That’s always music to my ears.
The real magic of a photoshoot often happens in the in-between moments—the laughter after a joke, the glance shared between two people who know each other completely, the quiet moments of pride and admiration that don’t need direction.
Throughout the afternoon, we blended timeless portraits with plenty of movement and interaction. The result was a gallery that felt authentic to them: refined without feeling stiff, intentional without feeling forced.
As we wandered around the estate together, it felt less like a photo session and more like spending time with old friends.

What I love most about these photographs is that they represent so much more than a rank change.
They tell the story of two people who met in college, pursued demanding careers in service to their country, navigated military life together, and continue choosing one another through every new season.
Years from now, these images will remind them of who they were in this moment—the dreams they were building, the accomplishments they celebrated together, and the foundation they laid for everything still to come.
Kat and Xabier, thank you for trusting me to document such a meaningful chapter of your story. It was truly an honor.
If you’re considering a portrait session at Agecroft Hall & Gardens or looking for a Richmond photographer to help document a milestone season in your life, I’d love to connect and create something meaningful together.
