One of the unexpected gifts of working in the wedding industry is the people you meet along the way.

This spring, I had the opportunity to photograph a gathering hosted by Zola for Vendors, bringing together wedding professionals from across the Washington, D.C. area for an evening of connection, conversation, and community. The event was planned and designed by Carmen of Evermore Occasions, who invited me to document the evening at River Club DC, one of Georgetown’s newest event venues.

Designed around a theme of bold pops of color, the event felt vibrant from the moment guests arrived. Warm pinks and tangerines complemented the restaurant’s modern interiors, while striking floral arrangements and thoughtfully curated details transformed the space into an inviting environment for conversation and collaboration.

As much as I loved photographing the design, my favorite part of the evening was the people.

Events like these remind me how important community is within the wedding industry. So much of our work happens behind computer screens, in client meetings, or on wedding days themselves. Having an opportunity to gather in person—to reconnect with familiar faces and build relationships with new ones—is something I never take for granted.

Throughout the evening, I found myself catching up with friends I’ve worked alongside for years while also meeting talented creatives I hadn’t had the chance to connect with before. One of the things I appreciate most about the D.C. wedding community is the willingness of people to share ideas, support one another, and celebrate each other’s successes. The strongest industries aren’t built on competition; they’re built on relationships.

That sense of connection carried through to the Zola panel discussion that closed out the evening. Industry leaders, including Carmen and other respected voices in the wedding space, shared their perspectives on where they see the industry heading in the coming years.

One topic that surfaced repeatedly was the growing presence of AI in our businesses and how technology is changing the way we work. While there was excitement about the tools available to help streamline processes and improve efficiency, there was also a shared understanding that what clients are searching for can’t be automated.

More than ever, couples are craving authenticity.

They’re looking for genuine connection, thoughtful experiences, and vendors who bring a unique perspective to their work. They want to feel seen, understood, and cared for throughout the planning process. Whether you’re a photographer, planner, florist, or venue, the human element remains the most valuable thing we can offer.
