There’s something special about photographing couples who share a neighborhood with you. Alexander and Garrett, a local DC couple living in Capitol Hill (like me!), reached out to plan their engagement session with a vision full of autumnal magic. They wanted fall colors, a touch of historic DC charm, and an atmosphere that felt uniquely them. October delivered the perfect setting for their story.

We decided to keep the session close to home—literally. Starting at Wine and Butter, a neighborhood gem near Lincoln Park, Alexander and Garrett brought their personally sculpted coffee mugs from home for some cozy, candid shots. It didn’t take much to get them laughing and cuddling, their love was effortless and real, making my job feel more like documenting than directing.

From there, we wandered the charming Capitol Hill side streets. The vibrant fall foliage, warm brick facades, and iconic row houses created the perfect backdrop for their playful and affectionate dynamic. They shared little stories about their favorite spots and memories, making every photo feel more personal and rooted in their lives together.

Historic Touches at Eastern Market and Capitol Hill Books

Next, we made our way to Capitol Hill Books, a treasure trove of quirks and neighborhood charm. Stepping inside felt like a cozy rom com. The endless stacks of books, narrow aisles, and warm light provided the perfect setting for some candid, intimate moments. Alexander and Garrett’s playful personalities were bright as they thumbed through pages and exchanged smiles—a book lover’s paradise.

Effortless Connection and Thoughtful Gestures

What struck me most about Alexander and Garrett was how natural and grounded they are. Photographing them felt like spending time with old friends. Their thoughtfulness extended beyond the shoot itself. A few months later, I was so touched to receive a Christmas gift at my door from them, filled with homemade baked goodies and limoncello they’d made themselves!! It’s rare to encounter such genuine warmth, and it made me all the more grateful to be part of their journey.

Why I Love Local Sessions

Sessions like this remind me why I do what I do. There’s a magic in celebrating the places where we live, love, and create memories. Capturing Alexander and Garrett’s love story in the heart of Capitol Hill—a place we all call home, felt deeply meaningful. It’s a testament to the beauty of finding romance in the familiar and weaving the everyday into something extraordinary.

To Alexander and Garrett: Thank you for trusting me to capture your story. Your love is as warm and vibrant as the fall colors we chased that day, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for you two.
